Instructions to use Customized Webclips for iPhone
Customized Webclips is another addition to our iPhone web apps, which helps you to create customized webclips. These webclips can have any icon you want from web. Like our previous web app SpeedDial webclip Generator, use provided bookmarklets to choose the icon image and website url. Use the following instructions to create customized webclips.
1. Goto Customized Webclips from your iPhone. You will see following kind of interface.
2. First get the ‘Clip Icon’ and ‘Website URL’ Bookmarklets. For that, click on the bookmarklet link, it will take you to the webpage showing instructions how to add the bookmarklet.
3. After you add both bookmarklets, goto any webpage from where you want the image to use as icon. Apply the ‘Clip Icon’ bookmarklet to that page and click on your favorite image. It will take you to Customized Webclips page and it will enter the image URL into First input field. If you know the image URL then you can enter manually also.
4. Do the same to grab the webpage URL which you want as webclip.
5. Now click on “Get Customized Webclip!!!” button and it will take you to new page.
6. At the end, create a webclip of the new page and you are done !! [Edit: as Erx mention in comments, it may take some time for the image to show up as icon, so wait for a while until the image shows up.]
Please leave some comments if you like it..

Yet another brilliant addition. I’m speechless. Thanks for your time and thoughtful work.

When I do it, the web clip is of the whole page instead of just the icon. I’m assuming that isn’t how it is supposed to work. How do I fix that?
February 5th, 2008 at 2:03 am
Joe: please can you tell me that from which site you are taking the icon ? Are you using the bookmarklet to get the icon? May be the iPhone’s webclip creator is not able to find the icon url from web..

I am using the mac reader app to utilize a podcast feed; I attempted to link a picture from the podcast site as the web icon and mac reader gave me an error message when I attempted to use the web icon I’d created. Any suggestions? P.s. other than this i’ve had great success with all your bookmarklets, thank you very much :). P.p.s. Have you seen the tabulate app? I couldn’t make it work, is there a way to make that function like your bookmarklets with java script? Thanks again.

Brent: well for the rss feed, i am using this webclip generator to have my fav icon with the feed. I select the icon and feed using the bookmarklets i have provided. It works for me. Please let me know, the feed and icon url u r using, so i can check and get back to u. I checked the tabulate app and i have added their bookmarklet to my list. That app looks good. Thanks for info.

I think I’m having the same problem as joe. I follow the instructions the icon I want shows on the final page, but I can’t zoom into the icon to make a webclip. I’m trying to use the first image u get when you search google images for “facebook logo”. Obviously I’m trying to link to facebook. Can someone help?
February 5th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
*** sorry image is first in google images for “facebook icon” ( not logo )
February 5th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Erx: Well in this method, you are not able to select the zoom of image to set as an icon, because it only sets up the link of the image in the webpage. This is all automatic process so that you can’t select the size of image to be used for webclip.
February 5th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
just figured what I did wrong. Joe this may help you. When u press add to home screen, u have to wait about 10 seconds before the app loads the icon as the preview. Excellent! Best app yet!

Erx: Well thanks for your input, i didn’t know that it take that long sometimes, may be i am always around wi-fi and have done all my tests on wifi, so speed was not issue for me.

I am not following this at all………………..can someone explain this in another way? For example, I want to make a cnn.com bookmarklet …………………….tell me how to do it please?
February 5th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
S: First you set up the bookmarklets. If you dont know much about bookmarklets than look at http://soft-use.com/2008/01/26/bookmarklet-directly-to-iphone/
The bookmarklets that are needed for this app are given on the app pate, ‘Clip Icon Bookmarklet’ and ‘Website URL Bookmarklet’. Set up those bookmarklets to your bookmarks. Then follow this steps:
1. First go to cnn.com and then apply the ‘Website URL bookmarklet’ It will take you to this webapp page.
2. Then goto some webpage that contains the image you want to use as icon of cnn, and apply ‘Clip Icon Bookmarklet’ . It will show you all the images of the webpage and select the one you want to use as icon. Again it will take you to this webapp page.
3. Now you are all set to create a custom webclip, so click on ‘Get customized webclip’ button on the webapp.
4. It will show you a page with your selected image. Create a webclip bookmark to your iPhone home screen and you are done!!!

Hey for some reason the Iphone webclip screen zooms in really far on my image, and is useless?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
ive created the bookmarklet per the instructions, but i’m confused at the following step. I’ve gone to the webpage I want, I’m just not sure how to “apply the website URL bookmarklet”
February 7th, 2008 at 11:11 am
John: “apply the website URL bookmarklet” means, after you open the webpage you want to bookmark in safari, goto ‘Bookmarks’ and tap onto the ‘Website URL bookmarklet” that you created, and it will automatically take you to the ‘custom webclip creator’s webpage and save your prvious URL’s webpage address. So that way you dont have to manually enter the webpage URL in that field.

I am in no way shape or form at all incompetent using the internet but I literally have NO idea how to use this. I looked up what a bookmarklet was but it didnt help me at all. I have no idea how to ‘apply a bookmarklet’. If there is any person out there who can give me a step my step process of how to do this, considering I do not know what a bookmarklet is I would greatly appreciate it.

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it. I is smart?
February 13th, 2008 at 7:52 am
This isn’t working for me..
I create the bookmarklets fine and they seem to work. I then hit “get customized webclip!!” button and it takes me to the webpage i want to use. I then click the “+” and click “add to homepage” but the icon is still just a preview of the page and not the icon i chose, even if i wait for like a min or 2.
help?

Is there any way to pass the URL data to WebClip generator in the command line? My site can generate the icon image then I could add a script to send the data here to make the webclip.

In the querystring I mean
JO
February 16th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Jeff: Well, you can automated the webclip icon, but only thing is that its designed to pass only one url at a time, so you can try the following.
1. pass the icon url as parametr in url like: [soft-use/webclipicon/index.html?icon=uriconurl]
2. Then it will store the iconurl to a cookie, and then again give the website url as parameter [soft-use.com/webclipicon/index.html?weburl=urwebsiteurl]
let me know if you get it working…

Will someone please re-explain to me how to get the image URL?! I could also use an example of any icon.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
When I click on my favorite image it doesn’t bring me to Customized Webclips.
February 19th, 2008 at 1:43 am
Thanks cube3×3, I think just being able to send the icon location parameter will do the trick. Its a long string and hard to type so the script could automate it. Thiink I’ll wait for the next iPhone FW/SDK to proceed though. Some app. will probably show up pretty quick to do this easier.
cheers

Does the picture have to be from the same page. I am trying to bookmark a message board but use a picture from a different page. I am just getting an error once I try to enter the page once I have made the webclip.
February 29th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
The instructions here are too poorly written. Icons don’t show up either. I think you could stand to write better instructions since you add more confusion than needed. And I think the person is right that the new updates coming will make this easier. Its already possible to add a bookmark to the Home screen so this is just stupid extra work. The only difference is a special icon/image on the home screen bookmark. Wow. Big deal.

I have an itouch does will this still work??? I don’t no how to save a bookmark to the home page… I did all the steps leading up to that part though.
(the instrutions are poorly written…)
